Interstate Commerce Act- a federal law that was designed to control rates of the railroad industry
Haymarket Riot- May 4, 1886, a labor protest rally near Chicago’s Haymarket Square turned into a riot after someone threw a bomb at police. Panic of 1893- Serious economic depression in the US, collapse of railroad overbuilding and shaky railroad financing which set off a series of bank failures.

Jacksonian Democracy- The period of expanding democracy in the 1820's and 1830's.
Indian Removal Act- Was passed by Congress on May 28, 1830. To negotiate with southern Indians, tribes for their removal to federal territory west of the Mississippi River.

Ordinance of Nullification- The idea that the states had the authority to veto a national law they see as unconstitutional by simply ignoring it.

Texas becomes a state 1845- Six months after the congress of the Republic of Texas accepts U.S. annexation of the territory, Texas is admitted into the United States as the 28th state. In March 1836, in the midst of armed conflict with the Mexican government, Texas declared its independence from Mexico.
Underground Railroad- A network of people who helped thousands of enslaved people escape to the north by transportation and hiding places.
South Carolina Seceded- South Carolina seceded on December 20, 1860, the first state to leave. Convinced that their way of life, based on slavery.
Emancipation Proclamation- Lincoln's order that all slaves the states at war with the union were free Homestead- A special act of congress that made public lands in west available to settlers without payment. |

XYZ affair 1797- The XYZ Affair was a political and diplomatic, confrontation between the United States and Republican France that led to an undeclared war called the Quasi-War.
Alien and sedition act 1798- Four bills that were passed by the Federalists in the 5th United States Congress and signed into law by President John Adams in 1798, the result of the French Revolution and during an undeclared naval war with France.
